The road trip which brought us to a long-ago summer home also allowed a day to close the current summer place which our family shares with a number of others. Lunches al fresco, sand between the toes, refreshing saltwater swims, and the very best of good company had been replaced by quiet, fall color, and long shadows. The beds and pantry shelves were covered. Furniture on the ground floor that was light enough was stacked atop that which was not in anticipation of the possibility of coastal flooding. With water, gas, and electricity shut off we locked the front door behind us … grateful for such a place.
