Kidding season began today. The dam, Candide, is an eleven year old Saanen X Spanish cross. Goats typically kid singles their first year or two and then give birth to twins thereafter, with occasional triplets, until near retirement when they usually revert to kidding singles. Candide was kept from the buck last year because she had lost condition over summer. However she bounced back nicely this year and she and Willoughby got together sometime toward the end of September to produce this nice, strong, single doe kid – born early this morning on pasture. We had snow showers and some wind today but Candide still remembers how to be a good mother; as long as the little one has a full belly, remains dry, and is kept out of the worst of the weather – she’ll be just fine.
